Ironically, the whole luxury and exotic car rental industry was not fueled in dollars and cents from shiny sports cars zooming off the lot, but rather from multi-ton Suburban Utility Vehicle. Or, as us American's affectionately know them as SUV's.

In Europe, our citizen's across the pond purchase SUV's for their intended use: on and off-road purposes. In the United States, we enjoy the same SUV's for vanity. Indeed, nearly all high-end SUV's are rife with a fierce amount of luxurious trappings. Heated seats and cup holders, full-blown sound and LCD systems—they're loaded, and then some. They're quite fun, though, and for a single (or not so single) guy on the town, hey, an SUV rocks!

Luxury rental firms make the majority of their kick from these bad boys. As much as you and I may be thrifty or outright cheap when it comes to our weekly gasoline bills, this frugality simply doesn't exist in the land o' luxury-for-rent. Legitimately affluent clientele and hoards of young guys without any concept of money make up the majority of SUV renters, especially in areas such as Atlanta, where image supercedes self-worth.

I conclude this tangent by stating the single, greatest influence of SUV purchases and rentals lay solely from the emergence of hip hop and R&B. This is seen both domestically and in the United Kingdom. Ask GM/Cadillac.
